Natural Indigo & Shibori Experience

This Beginner-friendly workshop is an invitation to create and reconnect with the beauty of handmade. Through hand-stitching / folding / binding and textile dyeing, you will see natural indigo and Shibori patterns gently unfold through patience and craftsmanship.

Workshop Flow

  • Introduction on Natural Indigo & Shibori (20 mins)
  • Demo on simple Shibori technique – Fold, Bind or stitch the fabric (50 mins)
  • Guided Indigo Dyeing (120 mins)
  • Reveal, Rinse, Neutralise (30 mins)
  • Opening the fabric and seeing the patterns formed
  • Closing / Photo taking (20 mins)

At Jadi Batek, you will experience the traditional art of Malaysian batik through a hands-on activity. Visitors can watch live batik-making demonstrations by our artisans, join a batik workshop, and shop handmade batik products all under one roof.

Depending on the class selected, participants may experience:

  • Batik wax drawing (canting)
  • Batik colouring
  • Learning basic batik techniques

Creating and bringing home your own handmade batik artwork

Yes. Our batik classes are beginner-friendly and suitable for all skill levels, including first-timers.

Yes. Children as young as 4 years old are welcome to join. As long as they are able to hold a pencil or paintbrush, they can participate in the activity. Younger children are recommended to join the colouring-only activity, while older children and adults may enjoy the drawing & colouring experience.

Colouring Only

  • Pre-waxed design is provided
  • Participants focus on colouring the batik

Drawing + Colouring

  • Participants learn to use the canting tool with hot wax
  • Draw their own simple design
  • Continue with colouring afterwards

We usually recommend the Drawing + Colouring activity for guests who would like to experience the full batik-making process.

If you have limited time or prefer a simpler activity, the Colouring Only option is recommended.

Yes, advance booking is highly recommended to secure your preferred date and time slot.

Walk-ins are subject to availability. During weekends, public holidays, and peak tourist seasons, classes may be fully booked.

Late arrivals may result in shorter workshop time, as sessions follow scheduled time slots.

Yes, participants may bring home their artwork immediately after the session.

For Small Batik and Standard Batik activities, wax removal and washing are optional. If you choose not to remove the wax, you may bring home your artwork on the same day.

Please note that Mini Batik activities do not include wax removal service.

Selected activities such as Batik T-shirt, Scarf, Pareo, or artworks that require wax removal and washing may take approximately 1–3 working days for the finishing process.

Courier delivery can be arranged at an additional cost.

Wax removal is the process of removing the hot wax from the fabric using boiling water after colouring, revealing the final batik artwork.

Selected activities may include an optional wax removal service with additional charges.
